How a Toddler’s Candy Battle Reveals the Power of Communication

Updated: Nov 13

A toddler, full of confidence, approached an older individual. With clear intent, the child made eye contact & handed over a piece of candy. It was evident—at least to me—that he wanted the adult to open it for him.

What happened next was surprising.

The adult, seemingly disconnected from the moment, misread the toddler’s request & instead handed the candy to another child.

The toddler, having successfully communicated his need, was left without what he sought, while the other child was placed in an awkward situation. With the golden ticket in hand, he took off running, as the other child scrambled to chase a horse on foot that needed to be returned to the herd.

The adult did not intervene; he sat back as if watching a rodeo, perhaps unaware of the emotional undercurrent he had set in motion.

Communication: A Prerequisite for Relationships

Should we focus more on becoming better listeners, observers, and communicators before entering into a relationship? Absolutely!

Understanding body language, being present in interactions, and expressing our needs are fundamental skills that can transform not only romantic relationships but all forms of associations and even the connection we hold with ourselves. We often take communication for granted, assuming that words alone are enough. Verbal language is just one part of the equation. Effective communication requires attentiveness, empathy, & an understanding of unspoken messages. When these elements are missing, misunderstandings arise, and conflicts emerge that are unnecessary.

Life as Our Greatest Teacher

Life presents daily opportunities to refine our communication skills if we choose to pay attention. Every interaction offers a lesson in emotional intelligence—whether it’s a disagreement at work, a conversation with a loved one, or a silent exchange of glances with a stranger. If we approach these moments with awareness, they become stepping stones on the path to mastery.

Mastering communication is not an endpoint but a continuous journey. As we refine this skill, we create deeper, more fulfilling relationships & ultimately, a more connected world.

And most importantly, are we ready to be the adult who doesn’t unknowingly instigate a toddler showdown over a piece of candy?

If not, maybe it’s time to sharpen our communication skills—before we find ourselves dodging flying snacks at the next social gathering.
